Mainstream Media Begins to Recognize Iowa’s Young Voters
January 2, 2008 1:14 amTwo more recent articles have highligted the importance and prominence of young voters in the Iowa caucuses.
- An article on the newswire Reuters summarizes the struggle between Senator Hillary Clinton and Senator Barack Obama in their quest for support among first-time Democratic caucus goers, particularly young ones.
- An article in the December 31st, 2007 USA Today questions whether young voters will actually turn out to their caucus locations on January 3rd, ending with the assertion that caucusing “seems like something the older crowd does.” This conclusion, however, is fallacious. Young voters (17-29 year-olds) turned out to the Democratic caucuses in 2004 at four times the level of the 2000 caucuses. Caucus participants are becoming younger, not older.
